Health Equity in Montana

This training session is designed to deepen participants' understanding of health equity and its importance in promoting fair and just health outcomes for all communities. Participants will explore the social determinants of health, identify barriers to equitable care, and learn strategies to advocate for systemic change. Through case studies, group discussions, and practical tools, attendees will be equipped to implement health equity principles in their work and drive positive change within their organizations and communities. Join us to empower yourself and others in the pursuit of health equity!

Trainer: Lawrence Jace Killsback, MPHLawrence Jace Killsback is a Citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation with a master’s in public health from the University of Montana. As a life-long advocate for tribal health issues, he gained decades of experience working with both urban and reservation Indigenous communities.  Lawrence served close to two decades as a tribal leader, tribal health director, and former president. In 2020, Lawrence was called upon by Native nonprofit organizations during the coronavirus pandemic to do public health work in Indian Country. Specifically, Lawrence developed a COVID-19 safety and prevention program for field work on tribal lands in Montana for the 2020 Election voter registration drives and the 2020 US Census counts. The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) awarded Lawrence the prestigious "Heroes in Health Award" for the Rocky Mountain Region, which honors an individual or organization whose work has impacted American Indian/Alaska Native health care. Mr. Killsback is a family man who practices his Cheyenne culture while coaching youth sports and archery hunting in the hills. Currently, Mr. Killsback continues to provide expertise in cultural sensitivity, trauma informed approaches, health policy, and tribal consultation.
